These underwater prairies not only support marine biodiversity but also play a significant role in carbon sequestration, making them crucial allies in combating climate change.
Seagrass and Carbon Sequestration
Seagrasses are exceptional in their ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, a process known as blue carbon sequestration. Despite covering less than 0.1% of the ocean floor, seagrass meadows are responsible for approximately 10% of the ocean’s carbon sequestration annually . Their dense root systems trap organic carbon in the sediment, effectively locking it away for centuries.
Moreover, seagrass meadows sequester carbon at rates up to 30-50 times faster than tropical rainforests . This remarkable efficiency underscores their importance in global carbon management strategies.

Seagrass in Marine Habitat Restoration
Beyond carbon storage, seagrass meadows serve as critical habitats for a myriad of marine species. They provide shelter and breeding grounds for fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, many of which are commercially important. The structural complexity of seagrass beds offers protection from predators and supports rich biodiversity.
In regions like the Great Barrier Reef, seagrass meadows cover over 3.5 million hectares, accounting for 11% of the world’s seagrass and supporting diverse marine life . Their decline can lead to significant losses in fish populations and overall marine biodiversity.
Global Restoration Efforts
Recognizing the ecological importance of seagrass, global restoration initiatives are underway. Approximately 23.9% of known seagrass meadows are now within marine protected areas, and nearly 2,000 restoration projects have been launched worldwide .
In the United Kingdom, efforts are being made to restore seagrass meadows, which have declined by up to 92% since 1985 . Projects like the one in southwest Wales have processed 1.5 million seeds, aiming to rejuvenate these vital habitats .
Similarly, in the United States, the Mote Marine Laboratory’s Seagrass Restoration Program focuses on developing resilient seagrass strains and innovative planting techniques to restore degraded meadows.
Looking Ahead
The restoration and conservation of seagrass meadows are imperative for maintaining marine biodiversity and mitigating climate change. As global awareness grows, continued investment in research, protection, and restoration efforts will be crucial. By valuing and preserving these underwater ecosystems, we take a significant step toward a healthier planet.
