The two‑day flagship maritime event, organised by the European Commission, the Shipping Deputy Ministry of the Republic of Cyprus, and the Limassol Municipality, brings together Europe’s most influential ocean leaders, policymakers, scientists and practitioners under the theme of maritime affairs and sustainable blue economy. PHAROS joins a powerful coalition of EU research projects in a joint exhibition that promises to transform how attendees experience marine protection, moving beyond PowerPoint presentations into fully immersive, hands‑on encounters with the technologies reshaping our relationship with the sea.
“The effort for healthy oceans has moved from conference rooms to the coastlines, and you can witness the change in action,” Sal Music, Head of Communications at the PHAROS project, stated ahead of the event. “We’re not just talking about restoration any more, we’re showing people exactly what it looks like, what it feels like, and how they can be part of it.”
A Virtual Dive Into the Future of Reef Restoration
At the heart of PHAROS‘s presence will be an experience that has already generated significant buzz among early registrants: a fully interactive virtual reality dive using Meta (Oculus) goggles, transporting visitors to the Gran Canaria demonstration site. There, attendees will explore experimental artificial reefs designed to enhance water circulation, promote carbon sequestration, and restore native species to degraded seabeds. Unlike traditional VR experiences that merely observe, this installation allows users to navigate through three‑dimensional reef structures, witnessing first‑hand how engineered interventions can breathe life back into barren underwater landscapes.
But the VR dive is just one window into PHAROS‘s broader technological ecosystem. The project will also showcase its EDITO dashboards for the Iceland and Ireland test sites, offering real‑time visualisations of oceanographic forecasts including nutrient availability and water temperature changes. For marine managers grappling with the increasing frequency of harmful algal blooms, these dashboards provide something previously out of reach: the ability to anticipate ecological disruptions and choose optimal restoration windows with scientific precision.
Three Stations, One Mission: From Blueprint to Action
PHAROS joins forces with members of the MPA Community Network including BLUE CONNECT, BLUE4ALL, BioProtect, EFFECTIVE, MSP4BIO, SkyTruth, and MPA Europe to showcase how innovation, collaboration, and inclusive governance are shaping the future of Marine Protected Areas.
The joint exhibition is structured around three interactive stations, guiding visitors through the complete cycle of marine protection:
Station 1: Smart Planning & Data – The Blueprint transforms raw environmental and socio‑economic data into actionable intelligence. Here, MSP4BIO presents its Ecological Toolkit with step‑by‑step methodologies for prioritising MPAs, while BioProtect demonstrates its Marine Planner, a decision‑support tool that identifies cumulative impacts and prioritises protection areas. SkyTruth‘s 30×30 Progress Tracker, an interactive satellite‑based platform, allows visitors to monitor global progress toward protecting 30% of land and ocean by 2030 in real time, identifying gaps and overlaying critical habitats on current MPA boundaries.
Station 2: On‑the‑Ground Tech & Restoration – The Field is where PHAROS‘s VR experience takes centre stage, but it shares the spotlight with BioProtect‘s environmental DNA (eDNA) surveys, which revolutionise marine biodiversity monitoring by tracking entire species communities from seawater samples without invasive techniques. BLUE CONNECT brings living restoration stories to the exhibition, showcasing seagrass restoration in Spain and oyster reef restoration in Belgium, proving that recovery is not just theoretical but happening now.
Station 3: Communities, Funding & Citizen Science – The People centres on the human dimension of ocean protection. PHAROS presents MINKA, a citizen science platform that seamlessly connects local biodiversity sightings in Gran Canaria and the Danube Delta to formal EU‑funded monitoring programmes. EFFECTIVE‘s COSEA App allows attendees to contribute to marine monitoring by recording observations (from habitat sightings to pollution) and viewing their data on a public map. BLUE4ALL offers Financial Guidelines for MPA Managers, providing innovative financing solutions such as payments for ecosystem services and blended finance.
How to Participate: Live Streams for Global Audiences
While the in‑person experience in Limassol promises to be extraordinary, the European Maritime Day has ensured that geographical distance need not be a barrier to participation. All plenary sessions will be live streamed for global audiences, beginning Thursday, 21 May at 9:15 CET.
Day 1 Live Stream:
Day 2 Live Stream:
The Carob Mill venue in Limassol’s historic old town will host high‑level sessions, the joint exhibition, and a portion of the workshops, with two nearby event spaces accommodating additional workshop programming. The setting itself (a restored carob processing mill dating back to Cyprus’s industrial heritage) provides a fitting backdrop for conversations about transforming maritime industries for a sustainable future.
Why European Maritime Day Matters
The European Maritime Day is more than an annual conference; it is the moment when Europe’s maritime community sets aside sectoral differences to address shared challenges. From shipping and fisheries to renewable energy and marine conservation, the event spotlights the extraordinary variety of sea‑related activities that shape European prosperity and identity.
“The EMD is the occasion to pay tribute to ‘maritime Europe’ and put all maritime sectors and activities in the spotlight,” organisers emphasised, “to help European citizens realise the real outreach and variety of sea‑related activities going on in Europe and provoke reflection on the crucial role the seas play in our everyday life.”
It is where ocean leaders meet, not merely to network, but to outline joint action on maritime affairs and the sustainable blue economy. This year’s edition features inspirational speakers, thematic sessions, stakeholder workshops, and extensive networking opportunities, targeting professionals from businesses, governments, public institutions, NGOs, academia, and EU citizens who simply care about the sea.
The 30×30 Vision: From Promise to Practice
Behind the VR goggles and digital dashboards lies a more urgent purpose. The global community has committed to protecting 30% of the planet’s land and ocean by 2030, a target that remains dauntingly out of reach without rapid acceleration of effective conservation measures. Projects like PHAROS and its partners in the MPA Community Network represent the practical machinery for achieving that vision: the data platforms, restoration techniques, financing mechanisms, and community engagement strategies that turn political promises into protected waters.
Whether you are a policymaker, MPA manager, researcher, citizen scientist, practitioner, or simply passionate about protecting our blue planet, the joint exhibition offers an inspiring glimpse into how science, technology, and people are working together to turn the 30×30 vision into reality.
